8 Ways to spring Clean your self-care Routine

If you are anything like me, after a long, cold winter I need to show some more love to my mind, body and soul. My self-care allowed me to survive, but I want more than to survive, I want to thrive. I want that for you too!

Self-care becomes sustainable and authentic when we think of it in terms of rhythm as opposed to balance. Rhythm is a “ strong, regular repeated pattern of movement and sound”, whereas balance is trying to keep ourselves upright. Rhythm is a powerful template for self-care because it allows us to ebb and flow…shift and change, as opposed to doggedly sticking to a rigid routine which may actually pull us off balance.

Just as you might spring clean your house, you can spring clean your self-care routine. Here are some ideas to consider:

  1. Re-evaluate your self-care plan - take a step back, reflect on what is working and what isn’t serving you or bringing joy. Think about what your ideal day might look like. More daylight hours changes the rhythm of our days. For me, with daylight hours starting earlier, I bring movement into my mornings with a walk, or as it warms even more, bringing my yoga practice outside. Is there a new habit you want to start, or maybe one you want to dismiss? Think daily and weekly and populate your plan with things that both energize, restore and allow down time.

  2. Re-assess your priorities - what is getting in the way of you caring for you in the best way possible and if your well-being is one of your top values, from you making that a priority? A yes to something is a no to something else. How often are your yesses coming at your own expense.

  3. Clean up your diet - when you’re hibernating indoors it’s not unsual to eat more comfort and processed foods. Kill two birds with one stones here, by cleaning out your cupboards and fridge, and giving your body a reset at the same time. Throw out anything expired, and throw away or donate any foods that don’t contribute to you feeling like your best self. A clean and tidy refridgerator and cupboards will set you up for success so now you can focus on better nourishing your body.

  4. Embrace the outdoors - nothing will put more spring in your step then some fresh air after being cooped up inside so much. Start by taking a walk to start your day, or on your lunch break. Add in weekend hikes where you can observe nature coming back to life and let yourself be inspired.

  5. Create space - our outer environment reflects our inner. Being surrounded by clutter can leave you feeling irritable and distracted. Clearing your home of things that no longer serve you creates space for fresh and new things to enter. Even spending as little as five minutes a day de-cluttering and organizing can make a big difference over time.

  6. Declutter your mind - just like your enviroment, your mind can be cluttered with things that don’t serve you. Start paying attention to your self-talk. A meditation or journalling practice can help you become more aware of the chatter.

  7. Detox your social media - if you don’t want to take a complete time out that’s okay. Review all your current channels and unfollow anyone who doesn’t bring you joy.

  8. Elevate joy - now go back through all the above and look for opportunities where you can infuse more joy into your life. What will put more spring into your step?! Make you smile more? Make you laugh out loud? Make you feel blessed and grateful?
